TIJO is taking the summer off, but we have worked with two West Michigan jazz groups (both with many TIJO members) to fill in to keep the 3rd Tuesday of the month jazz slot filled at the Watermark 920. This month, we welcome The Starry Night Octet! They play in the West Coast Cool Jazz style from charts written in the 1950 for the Dave Pell Octet from some of the smartest arrangers of that time, including Marty Paich, Shorty Rogers, Andre Previn, Johnny Mandel, Jerry Fielding, and Bill Holman.
Band leader Matt Lintula plays tenor saxophone. Trumpeter Mike Truszkowski is the High School Director of Bands at Spring Lake Public Schools. Dan Giacobassi plays alto and baritone saxes, and flute. Dale Nesbary is entering his 11th year as President of Muskegon Community College. Greg Miller is a guitarist and instructor who teaches Applied Instrument instruction at Muskegon Community College. Drew Placzek is a pianist with the Truth in Jazz Orchestra as well as the Starry Night Octet and Trio. Joe Oprea is a freelance jazz bassist who has been teaching and performing professionally since 2002. Drummer Mark Lopez holds a Master of Music Performance degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
If you like Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Chet Baker, Stan Getz and Shorty Rogers, you will like the Starry Night Octet!
Stay tuned for more information on the Beer City Saxes, who will be back at the Watermark 920 on Tuesday, August 20!
