Holding a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western Michigan University in jazz studies and a Master of Arts Degree (also from WMU) in woodwinds and performance, Tom plays bass, saxophone, clarinet, and flute.

Of jazz music, Tom says, “It feels good!” But his taste in music ranges from jazz to salsa to rock. In addition to TIJO, Tom plays for the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra the Steve Talaga Trio, the Kalamazoo Big Band, End Times Orchestra, and Grupo Aye, among others.

He teaches saxophone and/or jazz bass at Hope College, Aquinas College, and Grand Valley State University.

Tom grew up in Cadillac, Michigan in a family who loved music. He was drawn into music through listening to records, and being involved with his mother’s and uncle’s piano stylings.

On two occasions Tom has had the opportunity to play at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He also has worked on cruise ships, playing music from port to port.

Special memories are associated with many gigs, but especially with those involving some of the well-known professionals such as guitar duo Jack Wilkins and Jimmy Bruno, sax player Greg Abate, violinist Christian Howes and a long list of others.
